When a Bedouin would capture a wild falcon, they would begin to prepare it for sport by wrestling it to the ground, wrapping it in a cotton towel and then stitching it's eyelids closed. Then they would stay with the bird constantly until the stitches eased open. Slowly, the bird would get used to seeing the falconer and wouldn't be distressed. The falconer tries to associate safety with darkness so that he can use a hood to relax the bird.
