Historic gaming site without knowing it...

A crate containing 100 factory-sealed Virtual Boy consoles has been discovered in a warehouse in Dubai driving collector interest in the maligned Nintendo system, reports UAE's The National Newspaper.

"This product was just left years ago and nobody knew it was in stock," said Geekay Games purchasing manager Vijay Chandrabota. "For me, it was dead stock. I didn’t even know that this Virtual Boy existed until we found it."

Despite the utter failure of the console due to a dearth of games and a tendency to cause migraine headaches in users, the Virtual Boy has become a prized collectors item.

With fewer than 800,000 units shipped worldwide during its lifespan, a find such as the one made in Dubai no doubt has console collectors salivating like Pavlov's eponymous dogs.

Community centre to open in Hatta

A series of community initiatives has been announced by the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Hatta.

It is being done following the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to develop infrastructure in Hatta and undertake projects to meet the needs of the citizens.

Dr Maryam Mattar, Director General of the CDA, said a community centre will be opened in Hatta to attend to citizens' needs and provide different segments with the necessary social care needed, and to allow them to choose the specific social programmes they would like to benefit from.

"Setting up these community centres is an important step for CDA in its aims of attaining the goals of Dubai Strategic Plan 2015, declared by Shaikh Mohammad on February 3, 2007, which entails raising the levels of social development in Dubai and enhancing the role of UAE nationals in society, in an attempt to accomplish the key objectives of the developmental sector," she said.

The Hatta Community Centre would play a vital role in ensuring that the social care of citizens is maintained, as its services have been tailored specifically to the needs of the Hatta community, assuring residents that the initial preparations for the centre have been completed.

the cost to survey

the number of projects in Dubai has resulted in a shortage of surveyors. this shortage has resulted in a sweet pay increase for surveyors in dubai:

"Salaries for young qualified surveyors have for the past few years started at US $9,500 (AED 35,000) rising to as much as $11,000. The problem is that surveyors are in such demand worldwide that these salaries are the standard anywhere.

But the difference in the UAE is the fact that perks like paid accommodation and perhaps even transportation are thrown in, meaning an experienced surveyor is earning an annual salary in the six figures."

all of this should just lead to better building.

abras

"The fleet of wooden abras that ferry people across Dubai Creek is to be replaced from next year with a new generation of modern boats that are safer and more efficient, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said yesterday.

The new boats will be lighter, faster, more flexible and more environmentally friendly than the motorised abras they are replacing but will look the same as the traditional wooden vessels.
The authority’s Marine Agency said it would introduce some of the new abras in a pilot project next year. If they prove popular with operators and passengers, the existing fleet of 149 motorised abras – many of which are more than 30 years old – will be gradually phased out and replaced."

"The Marine Agency manages 149 privately owned motorised abras which carry 28 million passengers a year, a rate that is growing by seven per cent a year. Costing just Dh1 a trip, it represents one of the cheapest modes of public transport in the country. Marine mass transit systems are an essential part of the RTA’s plans to reduce Dubai’s road congestion."

Black Market - Cement

The construction boom has caused a shortage in the cement and steel, increasing the price of the materials and slowing construction on projects. There is a black market for cement in Dubai because of the shortage and long waiting periods, where prices are up to 60% above the price ceiling fixed by the UAE Ministry of Economy. The Ministry of Economy set a price ceiling in June 2007 that would stop the escalating costs but the manufacturers have charged other items in their books to make up for the difference in the price ceiling and the street value without being reprimanded.

New Property and Mortgage Laws in Dubai

Unlike the British housing market which has been suffering since last year, the property market in Dubai has reportedly seen a 79% increase in average prices since January 2007. This is on top of the incredible gains that the entire market has witnessed since the government announced its intentions to allow foreigners the right to own freehold title to properties on certain specific developments back in 2002. When this law was finally ratified in 2006, prices surged with increased vigour and led to some analysts earlier this year suggesting that the market was dangerously overheating.

NO FUN

A person must own a liquor license to consume in the privacy of their own home. To obtain a liquor license you must get signed approval from your boss, prove a certain level of salary that determines how much you are allowed to buy, and then submit several mug shots (aka passport photos) for approval. Pay the fee and the additional 30% tax on every purchase and you may drink at home. Then again, you can just pick up a few bottles in the airport duty free on your way in to the country, but two is the max. Why not just drive out to Ajman where it’s a free-for-all and load up the SUV? It’s easy enough, but crossing the Emirates with alcohol is illegal – particularly in the dry emirate of Sharjah, which just happens to lie between Dubai and Ajman. Go figure.

For, the UAE’s Cabinet on this day approved the appointment of the first two Emirati female ambassadors in the UAE’s history. Prior to the appointment of the ambassadors, in the last Cabinet reshuffle, two new women ministers had joined the Council of Ministers raising the number of female ministers to four. It was in December 2006, when, for the first time, UAE women entered the Federal National Council (FNC). There are, in fact, nine women in the current FNC. While one woman was elected, the other eight were appointed.

On Thursday (keep in mind, the time difference), dust covered Dubai and visibility was reduced to 1,500 meters. "Lack of rain in the northern Gulf this year" is said to be the cause. The haze blew in from Iraq and Kuwait via the northwesterly winds. Also, "A marine warning was issued on Thursday as winds of 25 knots churned up 10-foot high waves offshore." They are expecting the haze to clear today with a change in wind direction. Temperatures however, are expected to be 40-41C (104~106F) which is on the upper end for Dubai, especially this far into September.

In Dubai private clinics are banned from offering in vitro fertilization to couples, which leaves only one government fertility center to provide it. The reason is that the government is worried that doctors who do not share Islamic values might be tempted to allow a woman to become pregnant by a man other than her husband, which should be considered adultery.

Don't park overnight...

A car owner used the valet service at Dubai Marina, at a supposed rate of Dh20. Little did he realize it was Dh20 per hour. He left his car over night, after beginning to not feel well at dinner. When he returned the next day to pick up his car, he was greeted with a bill of DH340. Needless to say, he was unhappy, and even the parking people agreeed that the amount was too high, but there was nothing they could do about it.

How about those beaches???

There is discussion about the lack of exposure to waves, and the effect that this could have on the new beaches that have been constructed with large breakwaters to prevent their erosion. Studies suggest that the lack of wave action on the beaches will cause the buildup of a soft layer of muddy sediment on the beaches, which needless to say would be soft and not very nice to walk on, unless you enjoy walking in mud at the beach.

Writing in Terra et Aqua, a magazine of the International Association of Dredging Companies, coastal experts Karsten Mangor, Ida Broker and Dan Borgen Haslov say large breakwaters put in place to prevent waves from lashing coastlines are keeping out natural wave movement needed to maintain the health of beaches.

There are lots of people who say this is not true, officials at Nakheel for one, and all also agree that if there is any real problem there has to be an engineering solution.

How can we get some oil?

A surge in crude prices boosted the UAE's oil export revenues to an all time high of $70 billion (Dh257bn) in the first eight months of 2008 and the income could be close to $100bn through the year, according to Western estimates. The revenues from January to August were nearly $7bn higher than the country's total oil export earnings of $63bn in 2007. This means the UAE's eight-month revenues this year leaped by a staggering 75 per cent over the similar period of 2007.

Lyons-Dubai

"The Arab emirate of Dubai will build a replica of Lyons," we read, "under a $685M deal signed with the French city last week." This brings up the interesting question of whether an entire city can franchise itself.

[Image: Place de la Trinité, Lyon, photographed by Emiliano Calero Cortés].

The resulting metropolis will be called Lyons-Dubai City, and it "will cover an area of about 700 acres, roughly the size of the Latin Quarter of Paris, and will contain the university, a hotel school, a film library, subsidiaries of Lyon museums and a football training center run by Olympique Lyonnais."
It will only be complete, however, if the existing population of Lyons (aka Lyon) is cloned, raised in the exact same way as the source population, reading the same books, dating the same people, working in the same offices, etc. – so that they can wander round, eating tomato salads in sidewalk cafes, stunning future tourists from China. It'll be a cross-cultural Tom McCarthy novel – precise and choreographed reenactments on the scale of two cities – or perhaps some surreal, heavily Gallicized remake of Westworld: instead of being killed, however, you simply get over-fromage'd frites.
This reminds me of Ignacio Padilla's ultra-short story "The Antipodes and the Century," discussed on BLDGBLOG nearly a year and a half ago. In that story we read how "a great Scottish engineer, left to die in the middle of the desert, is rescued by a tribe of nomads," and, upon being nurtured back to health, he "inspires" his saviors "to build an exact replica of the city of Edinburgh in the dunes."
This "shimmering haze of towers" is soon buried by a sandstorm.

Gulf News reports that Abu Dhabi held its first camel beauty contest as part of the country's first Camel Festival in April 2008. There was a total of Dh 35 million in prize money up for grabs as well as 100 cars.

And some say they've never seen a bird in Dubai

Dubai, at just 3900 sq kms is not large by any standards, but its geographical position halfway between Europe and Asia and its fine weather means that it has become one of the fastest growing holiday destinations in the world. Dubai is also on a major migration route for birds travelling from Asia to Africa and versa, as well as having many species that live there year round. Around 400 species have been seen here, but many on the list are unusual, rare or just plain spectacular.

Despite its small size, Dubai is blessed with a range of different habitats; mountains, off shore islands and rocky outcrops, mangrove swamps, tidal wetlands, mud flats, lagoons and desert scrub. This variety attracts a wide variety of species, seabirds, Sand grouse, Bee-eaters, flamingos, kingfishers, eagles, vultures, owls, plovers, gulls, terns, flycatchers, larks, wheatears et al.

Over 1000 greater flamingos winter at the protected Khor Dubai Wildlife Sanctuary, just a few minutes of the centre of town, and also home to Western Reef herons, Spotted Eagles, Lesser Sand plovers, Broad-billed and Terek Sandpipers.

Another unlikely but important location is the Emirates Golf Club, where you can find Red-wattled lapwings, Pacific Golden Plovers, Pintail Snipe, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse and Isabelline shrikes; however special permissions are required to visit both of these locations.

Masdar, the world's greenest city

If you had to take a guess where the greenest city in the world is going to be by 2009--and yes, I am talking green as in "zero carbon", "zero waste", "car free "city--where would you guess it would be?

I was completely off. I just didn't think that a region rich in oil would be the first one to come out with a project of this scope.

The first city in the world based completely on renewable energy will be built in the United Arab Emirates. Electricity for the six-square-kilometer Masdar City will be generated by photovoltaic panels, while cooling will be provided with concentrated solar power. According to ENS newswire, design and operation of Masdar City must deal with the realities of Abu Dhabi's sub-tropical, arid climate where temperatures range from a low of around 50° F to a high of around 118° F in the summer.

City-In-a-Pyramid Could House a Million Dubaians, Power Itself

A particularly optimistic design firm in Dubai called Timelinks has proposed designs for the Ziggurat, a complete city to be layered inside of a massive pyramid that could serve as home for a million people at a time. Timelinks is currently seeking patents for a variety of technologies that would make such a building possible, including a three axis public transportation system that would run residents up, through and across the pyramid. They've also claimed that with a hybrid wind, solar and steam power the Ziggurat would be able to meet its own power needs, and that there would be enough room to allow for some minor agriculture in designated "green spaces."

Emergency response times

The ambulance response time in Dubai ranges between 30 minutes and two hours. Ambulance crews are not necessarily accredited, trained and/or equipped to western standards. Ambulances are not equipped with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for tracking the whereabouts of emergencies in the Dubai region. Callers need to be able to give neighborhood addresses along with landmarks to help guide first responder vehicles to the scene.

When a Bedouin would capture a wild falcon, they would begin to prepare it for sport by wrestling it to the ground, wrapping it in a cotton towel and then stitching it's eyelids closed. Then they would stay with the bird constantly until the stitches eased open. Slowly, the bird would get used to seeing the falconer and wouldn't be distressed. The falconer tries to associate safety with darkness so that he can use a hood to relax the bird.

The Beginning of Tourism and Free Trade in Dubai

The Persian Gulf War of 1990 had a huge impact on the city. Economically, Dubai banks experienced a massive withdrawal of funds due to uncertain political conditions in the region. During the course of the 1990s, however, many foreign trading communities — first from Kuwait, during the Persian Gulf War, and later from Bahrain, during the Shia unrest, moved their businesses to Dubai. Dubai provided refueling bases to allied forces at the Jebel Ali free zone during the Persian Gulf war, and again, during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. Large increases in oil prices after the Persian Gulf war encouraged Dubai to continue to focus on free trade and tourism.

The NCMS used planes to sprinkle cloud seeding salts in the moist clouds heading towards Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain. The monitoring stations already registered light to medium rainfalls in different areas of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Centre is planning to repeat the tests tomorrow. – Emirates News Agency, WAM

Buying and Owning Property in Dubai

Any nationality can have freehold ownership of land in Dubai.  However, this land can only be in specific parts of Dubai that are approved for foreign ownership by the Ruler.  Foreigners, in this instance, include anyone outside of the UAE and GCC Nationals (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia).  Only UAE and GCC individuals and companies are able to have freehold ownership of land anywhere in Dubai (this bars any company with foreign shareholders even if they're incorporated within UAE or GCC, but there are exceptions that deal with Public Joint Stock Companies that I have yet to fully comprehend).

Get the abbreviated story, with still far too much legal jargon here..

DP World worth

"DP World underwent an IPO on DIFX to list 23% of its shares in November 2007, which raised USD4.96 billion."
_from zawya.com*

So if 23% of the company went to the Initial Public Offering and sold for $5 Billion USD, that translates into $20 Billion USD as an estimated total company worth.

To put it into perspective, DP World is only 1 of the 90 companies owned by Dubai World.

By the way, these will be the people we are presenting to. Nakheel is one of the 90 companies owned by Dubai World holding company. Dubai essentially operates as a Market State like Speaks spoke about today. Dubai World = Dubai = Shiekh al Makhtoum = our audience.

Not too in depth, but interesting nonetheless

"Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from oil account for only 10% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate's revenues are from the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) and now, increasingly, from tourism."

According to him, Brazil is currently the greatest supplier of cattle beef to the Emirates. Last year, shipments of the Brazilian product to the Arab country generated US$ 35.5 million, against US$ 20.4 million in 2005.
In the last four years, Brazilian exports of cattle beef to the Emirates have grown over 500%, according to figures supplied by the Abiec.
